The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made significant strides in developing modern tram systems to enhance urban mobility and reduce traffic congestion. Two prominent tram initiatives in the country are the Dubai Tram and Abu Dhabi’s Automated Rapid Transit (ART) system.
🚋 Dubai Tram: A Modern Urban Transit Solution
Launched in November 2014, the Dubai Tram is a state-of-the-art tramway located in Al Sufouh, Dubai. It operates along a 14.5 km route from Dubai Marina to Al Sufouh, serving 11 stations in its initial phase. The tram connects key areas such as Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai Marina, and Knowledge Village, and integrates seamlessly with the Dubai Metro’s Red Line at the DMCC and Sobha Realty stations.
A notable feature of the Dubai Tram is its use of the Alstom APS ground-level power supply system, eliminating the need for overhead cables and enhancing the city’s aesthetic appeal. Each Alstom Citadis 402 tram is 44 meters long, accommodating up to 408 passengers, and is equipped with Gold and Silver class sections, as well as dedicated spaces for women and children.
The tram operates daily from 6:00 AM to 1:00 AM (next day) from Monday to Saturday, and from 9:00 AM to 1:00 AM on Sundays. Passengers can use the Nol Card, a contactless smart card, for fare payments across various modes of public transport in Dubai.
🚍 Abu Dhabi’s Automated Rapid Transit (ART): Innovation in Motion
Abu Dhabi has introduced the Automated Rapid Transit (ART) system as part of its Smart Mobility Strategy. The ART is a trackless tram-like electric bus system that combines the flexibility of buses with the efficiency of trams. In its pilot phase, the ART operates along a 27 km route with 25 stations, connecting key locations such as Marina Square, The Galleria Al Maryah Island, and Marina Mall.
Each ART vehicle can accommodate up to 200 passengers and runs on regular city roads without the need for dedicated tracks, reducing infrastructure costs and deployment time. The system requires charging facilities only at the first and last stations or depots, ensuring efficient operation throughout the route.
🛤️ Dubai Trolley: A Brief Endeavor
The Dubai Trolley was a tram system introduced in Downtown Dubai in 2015 by Emaar Properties. Featuring double-decker trams with an operational speed of 10 km/h, it offered free rides along a 1.1 km route. Despite its unique design and appeal, the service was discontinued in 2019.

Looking ahead, Abu Dhabi has plans to develop a comprehensive light rail system as part of its 2030 Masterplan.
