Trams in Sarajevo

🕰️ Historical Overview

The city’s tram journey began on January 1, 1885, with a 3.1-kilometer horse-drawn line connecting the present-day Faculty of Economics to the narrow-gauge railway station. This initiative positioned Sarajevo as the first city in the Balkans and Central Europe to operate a tram system, serving as a prototype for Vienna’s network under Austro-Hungarian rule. Electric trams replaced the horse-drawn ones on May 1, 1895, with vehicles manufactured by Siemens-Sohukert.
